Avoiding roadway hazards

Tips for Avoiding Roadway Hazards

There are a variety of road hazards that are present all year long—potholes, for example. However, there are also hazards that are more prevalent in the warmer months. Children playing in the street, road resurfacing and other repairs, bicyclists, joggers, motorcycles—the roads are certainly busy during the beautiful spring and summer months. What do you need to know to avoid these hazards?

First, make sure that you are attentive and concentrate on driving while you are behind the wheel. Put your cell phone away in a glove compartment or in the center console. Pull over if you need to look up directions or use a GPS device. Do not try to tend to your children while you are driving—wait until you are parked to retrieve a toy or sippy cup.

Next, you must always drive defensively. No matter how careful you are behind the wheel, you must assume that other drivers are not as attentive. Look in all directions as you approach intersections. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Do not assume people will use their turn signals when they need to—most people do not!

Always, always wear your seatbelt. Yes, sometimes they do cause injuries in car accidents. However, a seatbelt may mean the difference between you staying in the car or being catapulted through a windshield in a crash.

Slow down and take your time. Leave early if you are worried about traffic or road construction making you late. If you speed, you are much more likely to get into a motor vehicle accident. It is much more difficult to stop and avoid children playing in the street or pedestrians walking in your path if you are speeding.

It is wise to confirm the type of insurance coverage you have. From time to time, it may be necessary to add coverage. If you are involved in an accident, the more coverage you have, the better.

Finally, it may seem simple but—carry sunglasses with you. You can even leave a pair in your car to make sure you never drive without them. The sun can be harsh at certain times of day, making it difficult to see what is in front of you. During a busy morning or afternoon commute, the last thing you want to do is rear-end another vehicle.
